Weinmann, Mason make national championships one to remember with All-American performances
Just how high did the Cardinal senior set the bar last Friday afternoon? How about 5-feet-7 and All-American status. Competing in her second NCAA national championships, Mason cleared 5-7 on her third jump to place fifth in the high jump and become SMU's second-ever Division III track and field All-American. "It was a great day for Megan," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman of his senior high jumper, who placed ninth in the NCAA Indoor National Championships in March. "We were hoping that maybe she'd be able to crack the top eight … to get fifth is really outstanding." Mason's season-best leap of 5-7 left her tied with three other athletes and was actually the second-best effort of the competition, second only to Trinity's Christyn Schumann's national championship-winning effort of 5-9 1/4. With six misses during her first four heights, however, Mason had to settle for fifth behind Schumann, Kristin Moss of Williams, Jennifer Harlow of Wheaton and Kapricia Poulos of Millikin. "This was a great way for Megan to close out her collegiate career," said Nauman. "To go 5-7 her career-best at the national meet, it doesn't get much better than that." It was a tough act to follow that fifth-place finish in the high jump and the honor of being SMU's second track and field All-American. Yet, as impressive as Mason's performance was last Friday, Amanda Weinmann's was equally impressive on Saturday. In fact, it was an encore performance to remember. Making her second NCAA Division III National Championships appearance this season, Weinmann broke her own record in the shot put, unleashing a toss of 44-7 to place eighth overall and become SMU's third All-American. "Megan certainly got us off on the right foot, and Amanda just picked up right where (Mason) left off," said Nauman. "To come here, against the best Division III athletes in the country and leave with a pair of All-Americans, that's pretty special." The task of competing in two events at the same time proved to be too much for Weinmann's teammate, Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.), who placed 10th in the javelin with a throw of 138-11 and was 15th in the shot put with a toss of 41-8 3/4. "This was a great way for us to close out the season," said Nauman. "I very happy for all three of these athletes not to mention the direction that our program is going." |
