Mother Nature's wrath can't slow down SMU pair, as Luehmann, Mason bring home conference titles
Yet, while the elements were at their worst, the Saint Mary's University track and field teams were at their best, as the Cardinals captured a pair of individual titles and got a school-record effort from Autumn Valk (Appleton, Wis.) in the 100 hurdles to highlight the opening day of the two-day conference championships last weekend. Megan Mason (Rochester, Minn.) won the high jump, clearing 1.56 meters, while Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) was crowned MIAC champion in the discus, posting a winning throw of 38.49. Valk, meanwhile, improved her NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships provisional qualifying mark with her school-record time of 14.84 seconds in the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles. And Luehmann picked up right where she left off during last Saturday's second day of competition, placing second in the javelin with a school-record and NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 40.68 meters, then adding a third in the shot put with a toss of 12.99. Fueled by those two first-place finishes, the Cardinal women placed fourth in the 12-team field, while the SMU men settled for 11th. Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) also posted a second-place effort on Saturday, uncorking a toss of 13.09 in the shot put, while Valk clocked a third-place time of 15.17 in the 100 hurdles and a fourth-place time of 66.52 in the 400 hurdles. Emily Bartusek (Albert Lea, Minn.) tallied a fourth-place time of her own in the 400 (59.57), with Maria Roche (New Prague, Minn.) and Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) adding sixth- and seventh-place showings in the 400 (60.39) and 1,500 (4:52.62), respectively. In Friday's other finals, Beth Cleveland (Wausau, Wis.) placed fifth (39.,65) and Weinmann was eighth (38.63) in the hammer with a toss of 39.65 and Amanda Weinmann was eighth (38.63). |
