No matter what Mother Nature threw at her, SMU's
Luehmann made it look as easy as 1-2-3 at GAC

WINONA, Minn. —  As if competing against some of the top athletes in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wasn't tough enough, Mother Nature decided to make things extra-difficult for the Saint Mary's University track and field teams.

Cool weather and a constant rain made life at last Saturday's Gustavus Invitational rather miserable.

For SMU's Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.), however, it didn't matter what Mother Nature dished out, the SMU senior was up to the challenge, posting a first-, second- and third-place effort to lead the Cardinals' charge.

Luehmann won the shot put with a toss of 12.78 meters, and followed that up with a second in the javelin (35.33) and a third in the discus (37.13). Chris Fisette (Elmhurst, Ill.) added a first in the triple jump (12.72), while the men's 4x100 relay team of Joe Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.), Fisette, Joe Holman (Suamico, Wis.) and Dan Gerber (Belvidere, Ill.) also garnered first-place honors with a time of 44.05.

"It was a miserable day," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "The conditions were so tough — for everyone. It was one of those days that no one likes to be out in."

Gerber also added a second in the 200 (23.47), while Katie Boisjolie (Austin, Minn.) was second in the 5,000 (18:49.63), Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) was third in the shot put (12.13), Sarah Zweber (Elko, Minn.) was fifth in the steeplechase (12:51.01), Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) was fifth in the 1,500 (5:09.74), and Beth Cleveland (Wausau, Wis.) was fifth in the hammer throw (41.34) and sixth in the shot (10.87).

For SMU's Autumn Valk (Appleton, Wis.), Emily Bartusek (Albert Lea, Minn.) and Maria Roche (New Prague, Minn.) it proved to be a busy weekend

A very busy weekend.

In a span of five hours last Friday, the Cardinal trio competed in three relay races at the prestigious Drake Relays, placing eighth in the 4x200, 19th in the 4x100 and 22nd in the 4x400.

But they didn't do it alone.

Kelly Tanke (La Crosse, Wis.) joined the trio to run a 1:45.94 in the 4 x 200 and a 50.33 in the 4x100, while Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) ran the second leg of the Cardinals' 4x400, which stopped the clock in 4:01.65.

And the Cardinals' work wasn't done there.

Valk, Bartusek, Roche and Koranda toed the line again on Saturday, competing in the sprint medley relay, where they finished third in their heat, and 15th overall with a time of 4:14.22.

"The conditions were tough for everyone all weekend," said Nauman. "I thought our relays ran pretty well, especially considering the conditions. It wasn't our best showing, but it was pretty good.

"Just to qualify four relays (at Drake) is a great accomplishment, and I thought the ladies represented SMU well," Naumann added. "And (at Gustavus), we got some very good performances, especially considering the conditions. Overall, I'm very pleased."
