STEVENS POINT, Wis. Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) and Rob Friendt (Ogden, Utah) set the pace on Friday, and the rest of the Saint Mary's University track and field teams picked up where they left off on Saturday.
Just a day after Dingels and Friendt destroyed the school's records in both the pentathlon and heptathlon, the Cardinals shattered three more school records at the Eastbay Invitational.
"It was a great weekend for us," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "To break seven school records that's awesome."
Friendt, who shattered Todd Yankowski's year-old school mark in impressive fashion, posting a whopping 4,802 points in the seven-event competition on Friday, broke his own mark in the 55 hurdles on Saturday, placing third with a time of 8.02.
Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) chipped in a school-record time of 19:33.29 to place fourth in the 5,000, while Maria Roche (New Prague) added a record-setting time of 2:19.91 in a fourth-place effort in the 800.
"We had so many strong performances," said Nauman, noting that Becky Baron (Rapid River, Mich.) was third in the 55 (6.68) and sixth in the 200 (27.51), while Beth Cleveland (Wausau, Wis.) was third in the weight throw (13.31 meters) and Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) added a fifth in the shot put (11.98 meters). "In a meet like this, the place finishes aren't what I'm looking for it it's the times and the distances."
And the Cardinals' times and distances were impressive right from the start of the two-day event.
Just how good was Friendt's heptathlon performance? Not only did he demolish Yankowski's school record by nearly 700 points, but he beat his next closest competitor Friday by 400 points and the third-place finisher was a distant 800 points back.
Friendt actually broke three school marks on Friday, setting new standards in the high jump (6-2 3/4) and the long jump (22-11) en route to his record-setting heptathlon total.
"It was an awesome showing," said Nauman, who also had the pleasure of watching Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) break her own mark the pentathlon, posting a first-place total of 3,306 points. "Ashley and Rob had phenomenal days I think they turned a few heads out there today.
"Everyone should be very pleased with their efforts this weekend," continued Nauman. "We put together a lot of marks that will be at or right near the top of the MIAC."
