EAU CLAIRE, Wis. If Saint Mary's University track and field coach Kirk Nauman was happy with his teams' performance at last Saturday's University of Minnesota Open, he must have been ecstatic watching his Cardinals at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational Friday evening.
The Cardinals broke two school records and picked up three first-place finishes as the SMU men placed fifth in the seven-team field, while the women were third among the six teams competing.
Rob Friendt (Ogden, Utah) accounted for SMU's two record-setting performances as he placed first in the long jump (6.49 meters) and fifth in the pole vault (4.04 meters). Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) chipped in a first in the 55 hurdles, breaking the tape in 8.81, with Autumn Valk (Appleton, Wis.) finishing in 8.97 to give SMU a 1-2 finish in the event.
The Cardinals' 4 x 400 relay team also brought home a first-place finish, stopping the clock in 4:10.86.
Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) tallied a pair of second-place efforts, going 1.59 meters in the high jump and adding a throw of 11.70 meters in the shot put. Maria Roche (New Prague, Minn.) raced to a second-place time of 2:23.48 in the 800, while Keri Drake (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) was third in the 1,500 (5:14.15) and Dan Gerber (Belvidere, Ill.) was fourth in the 200 (24.31).
