Friendt, Nauman capture
MIAC indoor track honors
WINONA, Minn. Rob Friendt (Ogden, Utah) did more than turn a few heads with his efforts at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships last weekend.
He probably gave several spectators whiplash trying to keep up with him.
Friendt competed in a total of 12 events during the competition, bringing home a conference title in the heptathlon, while also accounting for 29 of SMU's 30 points in the three-day evening.
Friendt's efforts didn't go unnoticed as the junior was named the MIAC's Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year.
And Friendt wasn't the only one grabbing postseason honors, as SMU head coach Kirk Nauman was named MIAC Women's Coach of the Year, after his Cardinals collected a school-record 94 points and crowned two MIAC champions en route to their best-ever fourth-place finish.
Friendt shattered the conference's heptathlon record, amassing 4,881 points, while also placing second in the long jump (22-2 1/4), third in the pole vault (14-11), fourth in the high jump (6-2 3/4), 11th in the 55 hurdles (8.33) and 12th in the 55 (6.79).
"Rob's a little tired right now," Nauman said after the completion of competition Saturday. "He had a busy couple of days. To compete in that many events in such a short amount of time and to do as well as he did is pretty impressive. There were times it was pretty tough to keep track of where he was, and which event he was competing in."
