SMU sets 2 school marks, 17 season bests
at University of Wisconsin Invitational
Just one day after setting a new MIAC record in the heptathlon, Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) was back in the record-breaking spotlight last Saturday.
But this time, the Saint Mary's University senior wasn't alone.
Dingels teamed with Autumn Valk (Appleton, Wis.), Megan Moran (Burlington, Wis.) and Maria Roche (Eden Prairie, Minn.) to set a new school mark in the 4 x 100 (49.81) at the University of Wisconsin Open, then switched gears and a teammate as she, Valk and Roche were joined by Emily Bartusek (Albert Lea, Minn.) to break SMU's three-year-old 4 x 400 relay record, clocking a time of 4:00.30.
"This was a great final meet as we head into next weekend's conference championships," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman, noting that his squad not only broke the two school records, but also posted 17 season-best efforts in their final tune-up prior to the regular season-ending MIAC Championships. "Both relay teams put together outstanding performances, as did a number of our other competitors. It was a great day overall."
Valk and Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) narrowly missed joining Dingels (automatic) and Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill. / provisional) as qualifiers for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships.
Valk was just three-one hundredths of a second off a qualifying time in the 100 hurdles, where she was the top Division III runner with a time of 15.13, while Koranda missed a national-qualifying time in the 1,500 by one-half second, stopping the clock in 4:41.53 to finish fifth behind a quartet of runners from NCAA Division I Marquette.
"I'm very pleased with everyone's performance," said Nauman. "We showed that we appear to be peaking at just the right time. Hopefully our performances (at Wisconsin) are a sign of good things to come next week at the conference meet."

WINONA, Minn. For Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.), the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference multi-event competitions have been twice as nice twice.
For the second time in the last three years, Dingels made a clean sweep of the women's multi-events, winning both the indoor pentathlon, and the outdoor heptathlon.
And last Friday afternoon in the final day of the MIAC heptathlon, Dingels made it look easy.
After cruising to school and conference records en route to winning her second pentathlon title during the conference's indoor championships in early March, Dingels once again found herself standing along atop the podium following the two-day heptathlon competition.
On top, and again in record-setting fashion.
"Ashley had another amazing performance she did a real nice job in all her events and really put it all together," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman, noting that Dingels was fueled by first-place finishes in the shot put (37-2 1/2), 800 (2:25.28) and the high jump where she equaled her NCAA automatic-qualifying leap of 5-7 1/4. "Ashley set herself up nicely after the first day, and never really let up she did very well in her three events (Friday). It was a good, all-around effort.
Dingels who won both the pentathlon and heptathlon titles in 2003, breaking the MIAC's 11-year-old heptathlon record with a winning total of 4,641 points missed last year's event due to a knee injury suffered during the volleyball season.
But after her performance last Thursday and Friday, Dingels appears to be back at full strength and better than ever.
With her 4,668-point total, Dingels not only broke the school and MIAC heptathlon records, but the SMU senior's total also ranks No. 2 in all of NCAA Division III and automatically qualifies her for the national championships in the heptathlon.
Along with her first-place efforts in the 800, the high jump and shot put the latter two of which were MIAC heptathlon records Dingels also placed third in the 100 hurdles (16.21) and fourth in the 200 (26.49), while adding a leap of 15-4 1/2 in the long jump and 96-3 in the javelin.
"Ashley is a competitor and she showed that again this weekend," said Nauman. "She just knows what it takes, and she goes out there and does it."
The Cardinals' Jon Pace (Minoqua, Wis.) placed 10th place in the MIAC decathlon, totaling 4,833 points.
"For a freshman, Jon did very well," said Nauman, noting that Pace posted personal-best efforts in eight o the 10 events he competed in. "This was a great experience for him, and I look for him to really make an impact in this event in the years to come."
