Better conditions — better results — for Cardinal teams

WINONA, Minn. — What a difference a week makes.

Last Saturday, the Saint Mary's University track and field teams were trying to dodge raindrops — without much success — as they competed in the rain-soaked UW-Eau Claire Invitational.

Seven days later, the Cardinals found themselves in picture-perfect conditions as they took part in the Manitou Classic and Carleton Relays.

And, like the conditions, the Cardinals were picture-perfect.

The Cardinals took advantage of the ideal conditions, shattering three school records — including Dan Gerber's (Belvidere, Ill.) fourth-place effort of 22.57 in the 200. It was Gerber's first of two fourth-place efforts, as the SMU sophomore also placed fourth in the 100, just missing a school mark with his 11.04 performance.

Maria Roche (New Prague, Minn.) and Beth Cleveland (Wausau, Wis.) also got into the record-setting act, as Roche shattered the school's 800 mark, breaking the tape in 2:17.25 to place third overall, while Cleveland let loose a throw of 136-6 in the hammer throw to place eighth overall.

Emily Bartusek (Albert Lea, Minn.) chipped in a fourth-place effort in the 400 (60.30), while Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) and Cleveland went 6-7 in the shot with throws of 39-7 3/4 and 39-5 1/4, respectively. Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) was ninth in the 1,500 (4:57.17) and Alicia Hartung (Menomonie, Wis.) added a 14th in the 3,000 (12:37.52).
