WINONA, Minn. For the Saint Mary's University track and field teams, the indoor season came to a close with yet another record-setting performance at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
It was the end of a memorable indoor season for the Cardinals.
For all but one Cardinal, that is.
The indoor season still has one week to go for SMU senior Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.), who found out Monday that her 5-5 3/4 effort in the high jump at the MIAC Multi-Events was good enough to put her in the 14-person field for the upcoming NCAA Division III National Indoor Championships.
"When Ashley jumped 5-5 at UW-Stevens Point (on Feb. 12) I felt pretty good about her chances. And then when she went 5-5 3/4 last weekend in winning the (MIAC) heptathlon, I felt even better," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "But you never know until (the NCAA) makes it official."
The NCAA appearance will be the fourth for Dingels, who competed in both the indoor (high jump) and outdoor (heptathlon) national championships as a freshman, and in the outdoor (heptathlon) as a sophomore. Dingels missed last year's track season due to a knee injury.
"We're excited for Ashley," said Nauman. "I really think she has the potential to do some great things."
