TAMPA, Fla. The Saint Mary's University women's track team shined as bright as the Florida sun Saturday afternoon at the University of South Florida Invitational, as the Cardinals shattered a pair of school records while competing against teams from all three NCAA divisions.
"This was a great meet for us," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "It was nice to see how our athletes stacked up against some of the best in the country."
The records themselves may be new, but the record-holders weren't, as Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) and Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) each bettered their own school marks. Koranda just missed an NCAA qualifying mark, clocking a time of 4:43.55 in the 1,500-meter, while Luehmann shattered her javelin mark by more than four feet with her toss of 119-9.
"Overall, I was very pleased with our performances," said Nauman. "To come home with two more school records was really nice to see."
While some of their teammates were basking in the 80-degree temperatures in Tampa, Fla., other Cardinals were braving the cooler temperatures in Decorah, Iowa, as they took part in the Luther Invitational.
Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) led the SMU charge, placing second in the 110 high hurdles, clocking a time of 17.28. Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in a fourth-place toss of 39-1 3/4 in the shot put, and Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) added a fifth in the 5,000 with a time of 19:44.88
