ST. PETER, Minn. They were small in numbers, but the Saint Mary's University track and field teams certainly made their presence felt at the Gustavus Lee Krough Invitational Friday afternoon.
And, has become a custom this season, Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, shattering the school record in the 5,000 with a time of 18:15.60. Koranda's time not only bettered the school mark by nearly 28 seconds, but it was also 15 seconds faster than Tasha Pike of Gustavus' second-place time of 18:31.51.
The SMU sophomore now holds a pair of outdoor school records (the 5,000 and the 1,500), as well as the indoor school marks in the 1,000, 1,500 and 3,000. Her record-setting performance in the 1,500 at the University of South Florida Invitational last weekend earned her MIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors.
Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) added a second-place effort in the javelin (113-1) and a sixth in the shot put (38-6), while All-American Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) made her first appearance since having knee surgery midway through the 2003-2004 volleyball season, placing ninth in the high jump with a leap of 5-1/4.
"It was a solid meet for us," said SMU assistant coach John Skemp. "Ellen ran a great race in the 5,000 that was an awesome time for her. And Ashley Luehmann and Ashley Dingels both had solid efforts. For Ashley (Dingels) to clear five-feet in her first competition back was good to see."
