Cardinals keep things "low key" as they take part in UW-Stout Invite

MENOMONIE, Wis. — Since the rest of the university was taking a break last week, the Saint Mary's University track and field teams decided to do the same when they competed at the UW-Stout Invitational Friday.

The Cardinals sent just a handful of competitors to the meet, with the SMU women finishing seventh out of eight teams, while the men did not figure into the team standings.

"Since (SMU) was on break, we took a very small group of athletes," explained SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "Overall, I was happy wtih our performances in what we considered a low-key meet for us."

Maria Roche (New Prague, Minn.) and Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) highlighted the action for the Cardinals as each collected a second-place finish. Roche clocked a time of 2:23.17 — just .01 of a second off the school record — in placing second in the 800, while Folgers garnered a second-place showing in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.82.

"We approached this meet as a way to just stay on course in regards to our training," explained Nauman. "Next week we will bring a full squad to Carleton and our focus will switch into high gear as we prepare for the upcoming MIAC Championships."
