WINONA, Minn. — There is one thing Kirk Nauman is learning quickly during his short time as the Saint Mary's University track and field head coach — don't use ink when updating the Cardinals' record books.

SMU shattered four school records last Friday during the opening day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

That trend continued on Saturday, as SMU broke yet another school mark, and set a women's team record for most points at the season-ending conference championships.

And Nauman has a sneaky suspicion that that might just be the beginning.

"We had a great first day for us," said Nauman, whose women totaled a school-record 42 points to place 10th, while the SMU men settled for 11th overall. "This group of individuals has pressed hard to get to this point — to be at their best for this meet — and they are reaping the rewards for their efforts."

Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) led the Cardinals' record-setting day Friday, shattering her own mark in the 1,500, clocking a time of 4:47.52 to place second overall. She then teamed with Autumn Valk (Appleton, Wis.), Alicia Hartung (Menomonie, Wis.) and Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) to set a new school mark of 13:04.95 in placing fifth in the distance medley relay.

The SMU sophomore picked up where she left off on Saturday, breaking her own school mark in the 1,000, breaking the tape in 3:03.13 to finish fourth overall.

Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) got into the act in the 55 hurdles, breaking her own school mark with a second-place time of 8.57. Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in a third-place effort in the shot put with a toss of 40-6 1/4, while Valk was fifth in the 55 hurdles (8.84) and Maria Roche (New Prague, Minn.) was seventh in the 600 (1:41.07). The Cardinals also had a pair of relay teams place in the top eight, as the 4x200 relay team of Folgers, Valk, Roche and Katie McIntire (Naperville, Ill.) was sixth (1:50.57) and the 4x400 relay team of Folgers, Valk, Brooke Zachman (Elk River, Minn.) and Roche were seventh (4:12.76).

Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) actually got the ball rolling for SMU, placing third in the two-day heptathlon with a school-record total of 4,098 points, while Megan Mason (Rochester, Minn.) picked up a first- and second-place finish, before settling for ninth in the five-event pentathlon.

"This really was a great way for us to finish the indoor season," said Nauman. "I think we gained some valuable experience for our younger athletes, and we hopefully gained some positive momentum that we can carry over to the outdoor season."
