If Pre-Meet is any indication, SMU can't wait for real thing
WINONA, Minn. It's called the Pre-MIAC Meet a chance for several Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams to go head-to-head in a preview of what may transpire at the MIAC Indoor Championships.
And if Friday's performances were any indication, Saint Mary's University track and field coach Kirk Nauman can hardly wait for the real thing.
Led by second-place finishes from Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) and Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.), along with a handful of other top-10 finishes, the Cardinal women placed fourth in the five-team field, while the SMU men, paced by the mutli-event performance of Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) finished fifth among the six teams competing.
"This was a nice tune-up for the conference meet," said Nauman. "We had a lot of individuals who ran well this weekend, and I'm expecting them to do quite well at the conference championships as well."
Koranda just missed a first-place time in the 1,000, breaking the tape in 3:04.96, just behind the first-place time of 3:04.17 run by Carleton's Koby Hagen. And while the time may not have been quite good enough to earn the SMU sophomore a first-place finish, it was good enough to earn her a spot in the Cardinal record books, as her time eclipsed the old record by nearly a full second.
Folgers, meanwhile, clocked a time of 8.92 in placing second in the 55 hurdles, while the Cardinals also got top-10 performances from Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn. / 3rd in the shot put, 39-2 1/4 and 4th in the weight throw, 42-4)), Megan Mason (Rochester, Minn. / 4th i the high jump, 5-0 1/2 and fifth in the pole vault, 9-7 1/4), Katie McIntire (Naperville, Ill. / 4th in the 55, 7.88 and 7th in the 200, 28.27), Autumn Valk (Appleton, Wis. / 4th in the 200, 27.84), Alicia Hartung (Menomonie, Wis. / 4th in the 1,500, 5:09.27), Brooke Zachman (Elk River, Minn. / 5th in the 600, 1:47.30) and Tera Bolig (Cambridge, Minn. / 6th in the 800, 2:34.61),
On the men's side, Yankowski was a busy man, placing third in the long jump (20-3), fifth in the 55 hurdles (8.58) and the high jump (5-7), and eighth in the shot put (40-8 1/4). Jim Bansley (Chicago, Ill.) tallied a fourth in the 1,000 (2:40,05), while Jim Baertsch (Winona, Minn.) chipped in a fifth in the 600 (1:28.01). Dan Hertzner (Ottawa, Ill.) added a fifth in the 200 (24.05) and Patrick Polasek (Glendale Heights, Minn.) and Mike Marek (Winona, Minn.) were eight (2:12.40) and ninth (2:16.32), respectively, in the 800.
