Folgers leads record-setting charge at Coca-Cola Invite
WINONA, Minn. The Saint Mary's University women's track and field team isn't just breaking school records they are shattering them.
Three more school marks tumbled on Saturday, as Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.), Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) and Renee Willkom (Cadott, Wis.) etched their names into the Cardinal record books, while Megan Mason (Rochester, Minn.) tied another school record, in leading the SMU women to a sixth-place finish at the UW-River Falls Coca-Cola Invitational.
"We had so many outstanding performances," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "The strides we have made in such a short amount of time is really exciting."
Speaking of exciting, the most impressive performance Saturday was the effort by Folgers in the 55 hurdles, where the SMU junior blew away the competition with a record-setting time of 8.61. More importantly than the school record, however, was the fact that Folgers' time was an NCAA Indoor National Championships provisional qualifier.
Koranda couldn't match Folgers' qualifying-standard performance, but she wasn't far off, as she shattered her own school mark in the 3,000, breaking the tape in a winning time of 10:42.82 13 seconds faster than her previous record, set earlier this year.
Willkom couldn't keep pace with Wnona State's Sara Beier in the race for the tape in the 5,000, but her second-place time of 19:38.38 was almost a full minute faster than the previous school record of 20:33.68, set by Theresa Miller in 2003. Mason, meanwhile, cleared 10-0 3/4, equaling the school record standard she set a year ago.
"This was a great meet for everyone," said Nauman, noting that Jim Bansley's (Chicago, Ill.) sixth-place effort in the 1,500 (4:21.14) and Dan Hertzner's (Ottawa, Ill.) eighth-place showing in the 200 (24.00) were the top performances in the men's eighth-place team effort. "I'm really pleased with the strides we are making. I'm especially pleased for Jenny, Ellen, Renee and Megan their hard work is really paying off."
