With Luehmann at the wheel, Cardinals enjoy solid performance at UST Invite

ST. PAUL, Minn. — It's the stretch run for the Saint MAry's University women's track and field team — and if their performance at Wednesday's Tommie Twilight is any indication, the Cardinals have quite a kick.

Competing in one of their final meets before the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, the Cardinals' season-ending drive was steered by freshman Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.), who placed second in the shot put (40-2), fourth in the javelin (102-7), ninth in the long jump (15-11) and 13th in the discus (106-8).

Beth Cleveland (Wausau, Wis.) chipped a school-record toss of 121-5 to place 11th in the hammer throw, while Megan Mason (Rochester, Minn.) equaled her school-record height of 10-4 in the pole vault to finish third. Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) tallied a third-place effort in the 100 hurdles (15.24) and was ninth in the 400 hurdles (1:08.10), with Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) breaking the tape in 4:52.74 to place ninth in the 1,500 and Theresa Miller (New Berlin, Minn.) clocking a time of 20:19.58 for ninth in the 5,000.

"This was a great meet for our women's team," said SMU coach Paul Thornton of the non-team scored event. "We had a some excellent performances — Beth Cleveland setting a new school record in the hammer, Megan (Mason) equaling her record in the pole vault, Ellen (Koranda) just missing a school record in the 1,500 … .

"It's that time of year when you want your athletes to be at their best, and right now, I think we are getting to that point."
