WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University track and field teams don't get to spend too much time competing on their home turf.

So when the Cardinals do host an invitational, they want to make sure to give the home crowd their money's worth.

Which is exactly what they did Saturday at the SMU Quadrangular.

"This was a great meet for us," said SMU coach Paul Thornton. "We only have two home meets all year — and these kids get really pumped up to perform well in front of their home fans. It's almost like they aren't about to let anyone show them up on their home track — this is our parade and no one's going to rain on it.

"It's good to see that — to see them really excited about competing at home."

Dwyne Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) shattered a pair of SMU school records, placing second in both the 55 (6.68) and the 200 (23.19). B.J. Megan Mason (Rochester, Minn.) also rewrote the Cardinal record books, clearing the bar at 10-3/4 to place first in the pole vault. Mason's feat was just one of six first-place finishes for the SMU won, who also got first-place efforts from Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) in the 55 (7.99), 400, long jump (15-6 1/4) and high jump (5-1 1/4), Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) in the 55 hurdles (9.18) and Daysha Schleip (Holyoke, Colo.) in the 1,500 (5:14.10).

"I figured we come in here and perform very well, but as well as we did, there is certainly room for improvement," said Thornton. "Megan Mason set the school record in the pole vault, but she had three outstanding attempts at a national-qualifying height; Ashley Dingels had a great high jump, but she rushed herself a bit, or else her great high jump would have been awesome.

"Overall, it was another strong showing," Thornton continued. "We did some very, very good things, but there's certainly room for improvement — and that's our goal, to continue to improve each time we compete."
