Dingels puts all the pieces together en route to MIAC pentathlon crown
NORTHFIELD, Minn. All season, Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) has honed her skills one event at a time.
A first-place effort in the 200 one week, a solid showing in the high jump the next. Dominating performances in the long jump and the 55 at one invitational, followed up by a stellar effort in the high jump at another.
Thursday afternoon at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Saint Mary's University sophomore put it all together.
And with all the pieces in place, nobody in the conference could touch her.
Dingels dominated the pentathlon event at the season-ending conference meet, totaling a school-record 3,233 points in claiming SMU's lone first-place finish at the three-day event.
"Ashley had a great day," understated SMU coach Paul Thornton, whose teams both finished ninth overall. "But she wasn't the only bright spot for us we had a number of strong showings."
There may have been plenty of bright spots, but none brighter than Dingels'.
A two-time NCAA Division III national qualifier a year ago, Dingels got the Cardinals off to a flying start with her school-record effort in the pentathlon, where she outdistanced runner-up Kim Davis of Carleton by 26 points.
Dingels also placed in two other events, finishing fifth in the 400 (1:01.09) and eighth in the 200 (27.56). Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) added a third-place showing in the 55 hurdles (8.69), while Megan Mason (Rochester, Minn.) was fourth in the high jump (4-11 1/2), eighth in the pole vault (9-10 1/2) and eighth in the pentathlon (2,771). Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) chipped in a seventh-place in the long jump (16-3 3/4) and eighth in the shot put (37-6 3/4), and Ellen Koranda (Blue Earth, Minn.) notched a seventh in the 1,000 (3:10.66). The distance medley relay team of Folgers, Koranda, Autumn Valk (Appleton, Wis.) and Theresa Miller (New Berlin, Wis.) also recorded a seventh-place finish, clocking a time of 13:09.37.
On the men's side, SMU had two athletes place in the top six in the pentathlon, with Shawn Stewart (McHenry, Ill.) placing fourth (2,877) and Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) finishing sixth (2,719). Ryan Hover (St. Paul, Minn.) added a fourth in the 55 hurdles (8.41), and B.J. Klenke (Jordan, Minn.) notched an eighth in the 800 (2:00.62). The Cardinals' 800 relay team of Stewart, Dwyne Smith (Burnsville, Minn.), Dan Hertzner (Ottawa, Ill.) and Yankowski finished seventh in 1:34.07.
"Overall, our program made some significant strides by placing in so many events," said Thornton. "The challenge now is to continue to move up and improve on all our events and challenge our limits.
"Hopefully, we can take all the positives we gained from this meet and use them as a springboard for the outdoor season."
