Cardinal men split 8-1 decisions vs. North Central, UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team closed out its short spring trip with an impressive 8-1 victory over Greensboro Thursday afternoon.

And if the Cardinals were feeling any jet lag from their week in the Carolinas, they certainly didn't show it when they returned to the court Saturday against North Central.

SMU picked up victories in five of the six singles matches and cruised to wins in all three doubles matches en route to an 8-1 nonconference victory over North Central.

UW-Whitewater, however, turned the tables on the Cardinals in their second match of the day, as the Warhawks, handed SMU its second 8-1 loss in its last three matches.

Steve Grundhoefer (St. Paul, Minn.), Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.), Steve Clements (La Crosse, Wis.), Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.) and David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) were all victorious in singles, with Grundhoefer, Clements, Miller and Reckase all winning in straight sets, while Solseth needed to rally from a one-set deficit to beat Kaylen Duplie 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win. Tom Vollman (Oak Park, Ill.) suffered SMU's lone loss, falling in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 at No. 1.

Vollman regrouped to team with Grundhoefer for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, with Solseth-Clements and Miller-Reckase adding 8-6, 8-0 victories, respectively, at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Reckase was the lone winner for SMU vs. UW-Whitewater, as the SMU freshman posted a rallied from one set down to beat Erich Palecek, 3-6, 6-4 (10-8) at No. 6 singles.
