Cardinal men can't keep pace with fifth-ranked Gusties in 9-0 loss

ST. PETER, Minn, — Saint Mary's University men's tennis coach Jeff Halberg had a pretty good idea how talented Gustavus would be.

Saturday evening, he and his Cardinals learned first-hand just how good the nation's fifth-ranked Gusties are.

Good doesn't do the Gusties justice.

With its 9-0 victory over the Cardinals Saturday, Gustavus improved to 320-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competiiont during coach Steve Wilinson's 37 years at the helm.

The Gusties, winners of the last 18 MIAC regular-season titles and 33 of the last 36 conference crowns, did not lose a set against SMU — and did not lose more than three gmaes in any of the six singles matches.

"As usual, (Gustavus) has a very strong team," understated Halberg. "They are just so strong and deep. I thought we played pretty well, we just couldn't keep pace with them."
