Similar scores, different results as Cardinal men go 2-3 during spring break; SMU women finish 1-0
And if the Cardinals were feeling any jet lag from their week in the Carolinas, they certainly didn't show it when they returned to the court Saturday against North Central. SMU picked up victories in five of the six singles matches and cruised to wins in all three doubles matches en route to an 8-1 nonconference victory over North Central. UW-Whitewater, however, turned the tables on the Cardinals in their second match of the day, as the Warhawks, handed SMU its second 8-1 loss in its last three matches. "It was a good week for us," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "The guys got in a ton of matches in a short period of time and competed very well in all five matches. The women only got one match in (due to two cancellations), but they were very solid in that match. "Overall, it was a good break." Steve Grundhoefer (St. Paul, Minn.), Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.), Steve Clements (La Crosse, Wis.), Tony Miller (Rochester, Minn.) and David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) were all victorious in singles, with Grundhoefer, Clements, Miller and Reckase all winning in straight sets, while Solseth needed to rally from a one-set deficit to beat Kaylen Duplie 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win. Tom Vollman (Oak Park, Ill.) suffered SMU's lone loss, falling in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 at No. 1. Vollman regrouped to team with Grundhoefer for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, with Solseth-Clements and Miller-Reckase adding 8-6, 8-0 victories, respectively, at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Reckase was the lone winner for SMU vs. UW-Whitewater, as the SMU freshman posted a rallied from one set down to beat Erich Palecek, 3-6, 6-4 (10-8) at No. 6 singles. It was more of the same early in the week, as the SMU men opened their spring trip with back-to-back 6-3 losses to Franklin and Guilford, before snapping their three-match losing streak with the first of three straight 8-1 decisions this one a win over Greensboro. The SMU men were, in a word, dominant against Greensboro. How dominant? SMU got straight-set singles wins from Grundhoefer, Solseth, Clements, Miller and Reckase. The five lose just six games in the 10 sets combined Equally as dominant were the Cardinal women, who cruised to five, straight-set singles wins in their lone match of the spring trip and 8-1 win over Greensboro while sweeping the three doubles matches. Val Meschke (Pine River, Minn.) extended her singles winning streak to seven straight and improved to 13-1 overall with her second straight 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.), Aubrey Hirsch (Topeka, Kan.), Colleen Rademacher (Belgrade, Minn.) and Brittney Nielsen (Apple Valley, Minn.) also cruised to easy wins, as the SMU women dropped just eight games in the 10 singles sets. |
