Despite the lopsided losses to Carleton, Cardinals' Halberg finds plenty of postiives in season-opener
What he didn't know, was just how good Carleton was. "This may have been the best Carleton's men's team I've ever seen and their women were extremely good as well," said Halberg, whose teams were no match for the high-powered Knights, as the SMU men fell 9-0, while the women came out on the short end of an 8-1 decision. "It's tough to open your season against a powerhouse like that, but it's also a good learning experience. "We had a lot of new faces in the lineup both on the men's and women's side so it was good for them to get a chance to see what they are up against this season." The Cardinal women boasted five freshman in their lineup against the Knights, but it was veteran Val Meschke (Pine River, Minn.) who picked up SMU's lone win, as the SMU sophomore posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. The Cardinals dropped the other five singles matches in straight sets. It was more of the same on the men's side, as SMU's David Reckase (La Crosse, Wis.) was the only player not to fall in straight sets, as the Cardinal freshman opened with a 6-4 win at No. 6 singles, but dropped the following two sets, 7-5, 10-2. "It's disappointing to lose, but I'm very pleased with what I saw," said Halberg. "We have a ton of potential on both the men's and women's side, and I'm excited to see what this season is going to hold in store for us." |
