Cardinals' Meschke stays alive in consolation bracket of ITA tourney ST. PETER, Minn. Ashley Meshke (Pine River, Minn.) rallied from a set down to defeat Shelly Bebler of St. Catherine in three sets to stay alive in the consolation bracket of the ITA Midwest Regional Friday afternoon. Meschke, who dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to No. 9-seeded Marie Schutte of Grinnell in the opening round, lost the first set to Bebler in the consolation reound 6-3, but rallied for a 6-3, 11-9 triumph. The road wasn't quite so smooth for Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.), who fell 6-0, 6-1 in the main draw, then was eliminated by Erin Koch of Carleton 6-4, 6-4 in the consolation bracket. The Wilson/ITA Women's Division III Regional Championships, hosted by Gustavus, feature the top 15 schools in the region. The singles and doubles champions from this weekend's tournament advance to the Oct. 13-16 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. Several members of the SMU women's team also took part in the Gustavus/Midwest Fall Invitational, with Sara Clements (La Crosse, Wis.) the lone Cardinal singles player still alive following the first day. Clements, who received a bye in teh opening round, fell to UW-Whitewater's Jenny Woyahn,, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round, before rebouding for an 8-6 win over St. Catherine's Frankie Barnhill in the consolation bracket. Becky Newby (Brookfield, Wis.) lost 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and fell 8-2 to UW-La Crosse's Jenny Spoonholtz in the consolation round, while Brianna Placek (Greendale, Wis.) was knocked into the consolation bracket with a 6-0, 6-1 loss in the main draw. In the consolation round, Placek beat Amanda George of Gustavus 8-1, but was then eliminated by Macalester's Becky Schneider 8-6. Placek and Clements also teamed up in doubles, where they fell 8-4 in the opening round. |
