Stevenson Ends regular season 16-2 at No. 1 |
Last Saturday afternoon, the Saint Mary's University men's and women's tennis teams found themselves on the short end of a pair of 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference losses to St. Olaf.
Less than 24 hours later against Macalester, the Cardinals were once again in the midst of a pair of 7-2 decisions — only this time, SMU was on the winning end.
The Cardinal men swept all three doubles matches to get off to a 3-0 start and cruised to their victory, while the SMU women went 2-1 in the doubles matches before rolling to five, straight-set singles wins in posting the conference win.
"The weather was great, and it just seemed like everyone feeded off of that," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "Both teams started their matches playing doubles first, and when all six matches were done, we had won five of the six — which, obviously, is a nice way to go into the singles portion.
"We got off to that great start and we just never looked back."
Tyler Stevenson (Neenah, Wis.) — who had a hand in both SMU wins in the Cardinals' 7-2 loss to St. Olaf on Saturday — picked up right where he left off on Sunday, winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while also teaming with Adam Solseth (Shakopee, Minn.) for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles.
Walter Mannino (Chicago, Ill.) and Steve Clements (La Crosse, Wis.) also posted straight-set singles wins, while Solseth needed three sets to post his 6-1, 0-6, 10-6 win at No. 4.
The Cardinal women were equally impressive, as Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.), Val Meschke (Pequot Lakes, Minn.), Becky Newby (Brookfield, Wis.), Aubrey Hirsch (Topeka, Kan.) and Colleen Rademacher (Belgrade, Minn.) were all straight-set singles winners.
"It's that time of year when we want to be playing our best tennis," said Halberg, whose men head into this weekend's MIAC Tournament with a 10-9 overall record, while the women — who close out their regular season at home against UW-Stout on Tuesday — move to 8-11 overall with Sunday's win. "And I think that we are playing as well as we have all year right now."
