Cardinals pick up 1st win in impressive fashion with 9-0 rout of Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season in impressive fashion Friday evening, as the Cardinals rolled to a 9-0 nonconference victory over Marian.

"They guys played really, really well," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "It's always nice to get that first win under your belt, and to do it in such a dominant fashion was great to see."

SMU cruised through the singles matches, winning five of the six in straight sets — not giving up more than four games in any of the 10 sets. Only Kevin Wriskey (White Bear Lake, Minn.) needed a third set, as the junior rallied from one set down to post a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win at No. five singles.

The Cardinals were equally as dominant in doubles, where they swept the three matches 8-2, 8-1 and 8-1.

"This is a busy weekend for us, and this was a nice way to get us off on the right foot," said Halberg, whose team plays two matches on Saturday, traveling to Milwaukee School of Engineering for a 2 p.m. match, then taking on Carroll College at 6 p.m. "Hopefully we can keep things rolling the rest of the weekend."
