Season-opening message heard loud and clear as
Cardinal women open season with impressive 9-0 win
WINONA, Minn. - The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team was determined to make s statement with its season-opening match against Southwest Minnesota State.
And the statement was heard loud and clear, as the Cardinals steamrolled past Southwest State 9-0 in the nonconference match last Friday.
"The ladies really made a statement to start the season," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "They played with energy and determination from the first points.
"I'm very pleased with the result and the spirit showed by everyone."
The Cardinals picked up straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches, with Lisa Thompson (Lake City, Minn.) the only player needing a third set as she disposed of Lexie Becker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4. Ashley Meschke (Pequot Lakes, Minn.), Michele Clarke (Omaha, Neb.), Ann Leeder (Greenfield, Wis.), Becky Newby (Brookfield, Wis.) and Angie Beissel (Hastings, Minn.), meanwhile, did not lose more than three games in sweeping their singles matches.
SMU was just as dominant in doubles, as Meschke-Thomas won 8-1 at No. 1, Leeder and Beissel added an 8-4 win at No. 2, and Clarke and Jennifer Cochran (Winona, Minn.) were 8-2 winners at No. 3.
"This was a great way to get the season off and running," Halberg said. "Everyone played well, which was nice to see."
