Cardinals deserve a standing ovation from their home fans following stellar performance at invite
On the first Saturday in December, the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams host a multi-team invitational while also getting the opportunity to strut their stuff in front of their home fans. And strut they did last Saturday afternoon. "I don't even know where to begin this was one of the most impressive performances I've ever seen from a Saint Mary's team," said SMU coach Eric Lindquist, whose men's team placed third, while the women finished fourth. "It was just a total team effort. Everyone swam well … no, everyone swam outstanding." And Lindquist wasn't exaggerating. The Cardinal men got a pair of double-doubles from Jon Fox (Winona, Minn.) and Curtis Kempton (Owatonna, Minn.), as Fox swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 1:02.59 and the 200 in 2:25.17, while Kempton swept the diving events, posting winning point totals of 203.10 in the 1-meter and 222.30 in the 3-meter. Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) led the SMU women's charge, placing second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.40) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:42.07). But that was just the tip of the iceberg. "Pick a name, it doesn't matter, everyone swam so well," said Lindquist. "This is the type of performance that you don't like to single anyone out, because everyone did such a great job. "It's always so nice to swim in front of your home fans, and I think that sparked everyone to swim that much harder," Lindquist added. "We've had some dual meets at home, but there's nothing like a big meet like this, in your own pool, that seems to bring out the best in this group. "We have made some great strides this season, and today's performance was just another step in the right direction." |
