WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams got their first glimpses of some of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition last weekend, as the Cardinals took part in dual meets against Hamline, Augsburg and Concordia.

And while the final results weren't all that impressive, coach Eric Lindquist found plenty to smile about.

"It's good to get into some competition against MIAC schools," said Lindquist, whose men fell to Hamline 141-69, while the women were beaten by Hamline (187-43), Augsburg (107-89) and Concordia (146-59). "These meets were similar to last weekend's dual against Luther — they were benchmark meets that will give us an idea how we stack up against other teams in the conference."

Jon Fox (Winona, Minn.), who set the school's 100 breaststroke record in his first collegiate meet a week ago, picked up his second straight first-place finish in the event, as he posted a time of 1:03.61 vs. the Pipers. Curtis Kempton (Owatonna, Minn.) also posted a first-place effort, winning the one-meter diving with a score of 220.70. Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in a second-place time of 2:07.08 in the 200 freestyle, while Tom Walsh (Prior Lake, Minn.) added a second in the 50 freestyle (24.10).

On the women's side, Kasey Schultz (Cary, Ill.) led the Cardinals' charge, posting times of 2.21:05 in the 200 freestyle and 6:15.82 in the 500 freestyle. Schultz's efforts weren't the only eye-catching efforts, as Sarah Hayden (Chatfield, Minn.) totaled 13.25 pints in the one-meter diving and 139.05 in the 3-meter, while Toni Nigrelli (Kiel, Wis.) went 2:21.27 in the 200 freestyle and Margaret Walsh (Chicago, Ill.) stopped the clock in 1:19.66 in the 100 breaststroke.

Less than 24 hours after falling to Hamline and Augsburg, the SMU women were back in the pool against Concordia — and the Cobbers were far from gracious hosts.

The Cobbers placed first in every event they competed in en route to a convincing dual-meet win over the weary Cardinals.

"I think the theme for the day was fatigue," said Lindquist. "Swimming back-to-back days, not to mention the long trek to Moorhead, and it was a long weekend for us.

"Give (Concordia) a lot of credit, they are a much stronger and deeper team than I expected," admitted Lindquist. "It's good to get a chance to see what the (MIAC) competition is going to be at the conference meet, and after the three meets this weekend, it's obvious that we've got our work cut out for us."

Schultz posted one of SMU's four second-place finishes to fuel the Cardinals, stopping the clock in 12:48.19 in the 1000 freestyle. Walsh added a second in the 100 freestyle (1:02.88), while Courtney Keyler (Shorewood, Minn. / 1:10.37, 100 backstroke) and Hayden (137.60, 1-meter diving) also posted second-place efforts.

"I thought we had some pretty solid swims all weekend," Lindquist said. "But we were pretty beat by the end of the day on Saturday."
