Last Saturday afternoon at the St. Olaf quadruple-dual, SMU got another shot at the Auggies, and this time, the Cardinals came through with flying colors.
And while the Cardinals' 159-69 win over Augsburg was sweet revenge, SMU's 135-106 victory over St. Catherine made the day extra-sweet for head coach Eric Lindquist.
"It was so great to beat Augsburg, especially after losing to them the first time around," said Lindquist, whose men's and women's teams both lost their third dual of the afternoon, falling to St. Olaf 102-90 and 136-116,, respectively. "But to also beat St. Catherine, that's just the icing on the cake.
"We've never won two duals in a season, much less two duals in one day — this was just an awesome performance from everyone."
The Cardinals won virtually every event in beating Augsburg, as Sarah Hayden (Chatfield, Minn. / Diving, 103.40), Kasey Schultz (Cary, Ill. / 1000 freestyle, 12:54.28; 500 freestyle, 6:14.96), Courtney Keyler (Shorewood, Minn. / 100 backstroke, 1:08.57; 200 backstroke, 2:31.33), Jennifer Salzman (200 freestyle, 2:16.78), Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn. / 100 breaststroke, 1:14.14; 200 breaststroke, 2:42.16), Brianna Braun (Cold Spring, Minn. / 50 freestyle, 28.82), Nora Erfort (River Forest, Ill. / 100 freestyle, 1:01.12) and both relays posted first-place finishes.
And it was more of the same against St. Catherine as the efforts of Hayden, Keyler (100 backstroke), Danielle Braun (100, 200 breaststroke), Erfort (100 butterfly, 1:08.82) and Schultz (500 freestyle) were all first-place efforts.
"This was a huge meet for us," said Lindquist, whose men's team got first-place efforts from Curtis Kempton (Owatonna, Minn. / one-meter diving, 191.35), and Jon Fox (Winona, Minn. / 50 freestyle, 22.99), and a second-place showing from Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill. / 100 breaststroke, 1:09.17) in the losing effort vs. St. Olaf. "Everyone swam outstanding. I couldn't be prouder."
