Braun, Joyce lead Cardinals' charge at season-ending MIAC meet

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships aren't about team titles for the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams.

It's about individual accomplishments.

And accomplish they did over the three day meet, which concluded Saturday at the University of Minnesota Natatorium.

Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) went from goat to hero in the second MIAC Championships of her young career, as the Cardinal sophomore rebounded from a disappointing false start in the 100 breaststroke to break her own school mark in the 200 breaststroke, posting a time of 2:35.11 — while also swimming one of SMU's fastest 50 breaststroke splits ever in the 200 medley relay.

"The MIAC Championships are the best of the best." said SMU coach Eric Lindquist, whose men's team finished 8th, while the women were 10th. "We don't necessarily go there to compete for the team overall championship — our program just isn't there yet.

"Our goal is to go there and put together the best performances possible — which is exactly what we did this weekend."

The Cardinals posted 45 of a possible 54 season- or personal-best swims, highlighted by the performance of Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill.), who qualified for the finals in all three of the individual events he was entered. Joyce placed 12th in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.73),, 15th in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.42) and 15th in the 500 freestyle (5:07.95).

"I can't say enough about our efforts — to have that many season and personal bests is outstanding," said Lindquist. "This really was a great way for us to close out the season."
