Cardinal swimmers make the most of first invitational of season
ST. PAUL, Minn. It was the first invitational of the season and the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams were hoping to turn a few heads.
And according to coach Eric Lindquist, that's exactly what the Cardinals did Saturday afternoon at the Macalester Invitational.
Led by Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) and Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill.), the Cardinals made their presence known, as the Cardinal men swam to a fourth-place finish, while the SMU women placed fifth.
"It was a tough, long weekend," admitted Lindquist, whose team swam a dual against Macalester Friday night, then turned around less than 15 hours later to compete in the day-long invitational. "I was happy with the way we performed we got some very good swims and everyone did a nice job.
"It was good to see how we would perform in an invitational setting, and I thought we did a nice job."
Braun, who had won the 100 breaststroke in each of the Cardinals' three previous meets this season, saw her winning streak come to a half Saturday, as St. Thomas' Cathleen Daly edged the SMU junior by three seconds to win the event in a time of 1:19:04, with Braun taking second in 1:22.57. Braun also placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke, posting a time of 3:02.66, and teamed with Kasey Schultz (Cary, Ill.), Toni Nigrelli (Kiel, Wis.) and Lisa Salm (Chilton, Wis.) to take fifth in the 200 medley relay (2:21.65).
Schultz chipped in a sixth-place time of 11:01.47 in the 800 freestyle, while Salm was sixth in the 100 freestyle (1:07.72), Nigrelli was sixth in the 400 IM (6:20.58), and Sarah Hayden (Chatfield, Minn.) was eighth in the three-meter diving (120.55) and 10th in the 1-meter (106.70).
Joyce stole the show for the Cardinal men, placing third in both the 400 IM (5:39.40) and the 200 breaststroke (2:55.77), while also placing fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.56) and joining Mike Marek (Winona, Minn.), DeAndrae Noble (St. Paul, Minn.) and Gerry Lentino (Chicago, Ill.) to place fourth in the 200 medley relay.
