Cardinals save best for last as 3 new school records just tip of iceberg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's swimming and diving team placed eighth, while the Cardinal women placed 10th at the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships — and SMU coach Eric Lindquist couldn't be happier.

Not at the place finishes, but at the Cardinals' performance.

"We just don't have the depth to compete with the top teams in the conference right now," said Lindquist. "Gustavus, St. Olaf, Carleton, St. John's, those teams are so deep and so talented — you can't judge what we accomplished over the weekend by where we fared against those teams."

Rather than look at the team standings, Lindquist only has to look at the results of the individual events to rate his swimmers.

And the ranking would be Grade-A.

"This was an awesome meet for us," said Lindquist, whose teams broke three individual school records, posted 24 season-best times among their 30 swims, and collected 19 all-time personal-bests. "There were so many fantastic swims and strong performances — it was a great way to put a cap on a terrific season."

Freshman Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn.) closed out a stellar freshman season in much the same way she started it — in record-setting fashion. Braun lowered her school-record times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, clocking times of 1:12.74 and 2:37.27, respectively.

Senior Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) made her final MIAC Championships a memorable one, breaking the elusive 50 freestyle record, stopping the clock in 25.25 to place 13th overall.

And that was just the start.

Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.) narrowly missed breaking his own school mark in the 1,650, placing 11th in 17:27.55, while adding a 15th-place effort in the 500 (4:59.96). Freshman Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill.) placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.13), while Kasey Schultz (Cary, Ill.) dropped more than a minute off her best time in the 1,650 freestyle (19:41.34) and Becca Grube (Appleton, Wis.) had PRs in both in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) swam a lifetime best 200 freestyle (2:07.35) to lead off the SMU 800 freestyle relay and Maggie Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn. / 100 freestyle), Inez Maldonado (Mound, Minn. / 100 freestyle), Kelsey Ibis (Maple Grove, Minn. / 100, 200 breaststroke and 50 freestyle) and Gerry Lentino (Chicago, Ill. / 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly) also turned in personal-best performances.

"Im very pleased with our performances," said Lindquist. "It was a great three days of competition, and, hopefully, a sign of more good things to come in the future."
