WINONA, Minn. - Right from the start of the season, Saint Mary's University swimming and diving coach Eric Lindquist made it clear that the final team results were of little concern to him.
In fact, to prove his point, his Cardinals battled through one of the toughest weeks of practice yet this season, including what Lindquist called, "two killer workouts" on Thursday and Friday - the final two days leading up to last Saturday's Macalester Invitational.
They were tired, sore and a little banged up, but the Cardinals battled through Saturday, with the SMU men placing fourth, while the Cardinal women took fifth.
"Like I've said all season, the final team results don't mean anything - no matter where we finished in the team standings, this was an outstanding meet for us," said Lindquist. "We've been training very hard and in a meet like this, I like to see how we respond, and I thought we did well."
Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) had an exceptional meet for the Cardinals, placing second in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events. The SMU senior clocked a time of 29.09 to take second in the 50 free, then added a time of 1:04.99 in placing second in the 100 free.
"Lindsay had a phenomenal day," praised Lindquist. "Those were two quality swims."
Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.) added a second in the 400 freestyle (4:49.09), while Brian Joyce (Chicago, Ill. / 100 breaststroke, 1:19.49; 200 breaststroke, 2:53.98) and Danielle Braun (Cold Spring, Minn. / 100 breaststroke, 1:22.50) added third-place efforts.
"That was a tough meet for us, not only because of the tough workouts we've had leading up to it, but also because the meet was in a metered pool (rather than the customary yards)," explained Lindquist. "The times seem slower, but when you consider you a swimming a longer distance, they are much better than they appear.
"It's really tough on our distance swimmers, because we've been spending a lot of time on pace work and stroke counts, and when you get into a metered pool, it throws it all off.
Im very happy with the way we performed, Lindquist added. If those performances are any indication how we will compete (today), we should be in for another great, great meet.
