SMU looking for continues improvement in dual vs. Luther

WINONA, Minn. — They may only have a roster of four swimmers, but the Saint Mary's University men's swimming and diving team's effort against Macalester last Friday was anything but small.

Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.), Brian Travers (Chicago, Ill.) and Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) all collected two first-place finishes as SMU gave the Scots all they could handle in a 67-54 season-opening dual-meet loss.

Macalester had a little easier time against the SMU women, cruising to a 107-75 victory.

"Our guys had an awesome performance," said SMU coach Eric Lindquist of his men's team's effort. "They won every race they entered — I guess we should have entered them in more events."

Twedt took home first-place honors in the 400- and 800-meter freestyle events, clocking times of 4:46.09 and (9:45.24, respectively, while Travers won the 200-meter freestyle (2:21.01) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:13.82). Gibson, meanwhile, dominated the sprints, winning the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events with times of 25.66 and 57.42, respectively.

On the women's side, Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) won the 400-meter freestyle in a time of 5:24.74 and Becca Grube (Appleton, Wis.) won the 100 backstroke (1:24.27), while Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) chipped in second-place efforts in both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle (30.17 and 1:07.75). Ellen Meloy (Rochester, Minn.) also posted a pair of second-place showings in diving, totaling 191.10 points in the one-meter and 196.13 points in the three-meter.

"It was a good opening meet for both teams," said Lindquist, whose teams return to action tonight, when they host Luther in a dual at the Jul Gernes Pool. "We had some very good swims, and hopefully we can just keep building."
