WINONA, Minn. Juniors Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) and Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.), along with senior Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) were named the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving team's most valuable swimmers at the team's end of the year banquet.
Andre, swimming in her final collegiate meet, finally etched her name in the SMU record books in the 500 freestyle at the MIAC Championships, posting a time of 5:34.34. Gibson broke one of the oldest records at SMU, clocking a time of 49.77 in the 100 freestyle to finish 16th at the MIAC.
Twedt, meanwhile, rewrote his own record-setting time in the 1,650 freestyle at the conference championships, touching the wall in 17:22.47.
Along with his school record-setting time of 17:22.47, which earned him an 11th-place finish in the 1,650, Twedt also qualified for the finals in the 500, where he finished 13th in 5:01.46.
Tony Gruenke (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Abby Huot (Lake Elmo, Minn.) received the Cardinal Spirit Award, given annually to the male and female swimmer who, through their character, sportsmanship, qualify of effort and overall leadership exemplifies the spirit of the ideal teammate.
Brian Travers (Chicago, Ill.) and Maggie Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.), meanwhile, were named the team's most improved swimmers.
The Cardinals also voted on team captains for the upcoming 2004-2005 season, naming Gibson and Twedt the men's captains, while Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) and Becca Grube (Appleton, Wis.) were selected the women's captains.
