SMU closes out regular season, turns focus to MIAC
WINONA, Minn. It wasn't their best effort of the season, and it wasn't their worst the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams' regular season-ending meet against UW-River Falls last Saturday was somewhere in-between.
"I think we were a bit overworked in some cases we kind of swam all over the place," said SMU coach Eric Lindquist, whose men's team dropped a 102-55 decision to the Falcons, while the Cardinal women fell 125.5-102.5. "There were some nice races, but overall, it wasn't one of our best."
Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) picked up a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle, posting a time of 5:40.45, just missing the school record by 2.05 seconds. Andre, one of five seniors swimming their final regular-season meet, also earned a second in the 100 butterfly (1:11.81). Tori Evans (Junction City, Ore.) picked up SMU's other first-place finish, touching the wall in 2:15.15 in the 200 freestyle, while Abby Huot (Lake Elmo, Minn.) was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.61).
"There were a lot of great swims, a lot of solid, second-place efforts just not enough firsts," said Lindquist. "We swam well, we swam hard, and now we can truly focus on the conference championships (in two weeks).
"That's been our No. 1 priority all season, so now that we've finished the regular season part of our schedule, we can complete our final preparations for our biggest meet of the year."
