WINONA, Minn. — Eric Lindquist had a simple request for his Saint Mary's University team heading into Saturday's nonconference dual against UW-River Falls — close out the regular season with a bang.

The Cardinals, however, had other ideas. End with a bang, how about a sonic boom?

The SMU men, behind school records from divers Erik Oksnevad (Blaine, Minn.) and Kevin Jepsen (Downers Grove, Ill.), picked up their second straight dual-meet victory, beating UW-River Falls 113-88.

And if those numbers — two school records and two straight dual-meet wins — aren't enough, try these on for size:

* One pool record.

* 12 season-best times.

* Seven first-place finishes.

"We swam great," understated Lindquist, whose women's team may not have beaten the Falcons, falling 124-95, but certainly did their part to contribute to the Cardinals' stellar day. "In our training, our goal is to have everyone swimming season-best times at the MIAC Championships (in two weeks), but we came awfully close to getting all season-bests today.

"It was an awesome performance."

A performance led the Cardinals freshmen divers.

Jepsen broke the school — and pool — records in winning the 1-meter diving competition (291.25), while Oksnevad rewrote his own record to win the 3-meter competition (278.10). Both posted national-qualifying marks in winning their respective events.

"Our divers did a tremendous job," praised Lindquist. "But so did everyone else."

Oksnevad and Jepsen were just the tip of the iceberg.

Logan Twedt (Hastings, Minn.) won the 1,000 freestyle (10:55.77), while Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill.) posted a season-best time of 56.75 to win the 100 backstroke and Steve Sadorf (Chicago, Ill.) touched in the wall in a career-best 1:04.00 to win the 100 breaststroke. Ryan Girtler (Winona, Minn.) chipped in a second in the 100 butterfly (1:01.00) and Sean Gibson (Chicago, Ill.) posted a career-best time of 23.02 to place third in the 50 freestyle

Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska) won the 1,000 freestyle (12:04.11) and placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:55.95) to lead the SMU women. Louise Turnquist (Woodbury, Minn.) pitched in a first in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.7), while Lindsay DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) was second in the 50 freestyle (26.71) and Bethany Heinz (Mosinee, Wis.) was third in the 100 butterfly (1:12.74).

"We had so many contributors today — and that's very important heading into the conference meet," said Lindquist. "To see that kind of performance in our final (regular-season) meet, it was awesome.

"Hopefully, it's a sign of good things to come."
