Van Lith, Andre lead the way as Cardinals post 2nd straight solid showing
WINONA, Minn. Eric Lindquist wasn't sure what to expect when his Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams returned to the water Saturday afternoon at the SMU Invitational.
Afterall, less than 24 hours earlier, the Cardinals were battling Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference powerhouse St. Olaf in a dual meet.
In fact, Lindquist half-expected his teams to be tired, sore and, certainly, less than 100 percent.
They weren't.
Led by Kyle Van Lith (Appleton, Wis.) and Heidi Andre (Fairbanks, Alaska), the Cardinals turned in their second straight impressive performance, as the SMU men placed second, while the Cardinal women took fifth.
"Place-wise, it looks like an average meet," said Lindquist, referring to SMU's second-place finish out of three men's teams, and the women's fifth-place showing in the field of six. "But individually, these swimmers really showed me something today.
"We had people who swam outstanding races (Friday vs. St. Olaf) and then turned around and better those perormances today."
Van Lith and Ben Chastek (St. Paul, Minn.) picked up the Cardinals' only first-place finishes, as Van Lith won the 50 freestyle (23.18) and Chastek took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.07). Van Lith also added a second in the 100 freestyle (52.33), while Scott Schultz (Cary, Ill. / 100 and 200 backstroke, 57.71, 2:11.29), Adam Hennen (Jordan, Minn. / Diving, 115.30), Logan Twedt (Winona, Minn. / 500 freestyle, 5:35.75) and Steve Sadorf (Chicago, Ill. / 400 IM, 5:11.38) also chipped in second-place showings.
On the women's side, Andre, coming off a grueling 500-1000 freestyle double Friday night, showed no signs of tiring on Saturday as she placed second in the 1650 freestyle (20:16.87) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:08.98). Lindsay Salisbury (Waukesha, Wis.) and Lindsey DeLaRosby (Two Harbors, Minn.) picked up right where they left off Friday in the 50 freestyle, placing fifth and eight, respectively with times of 26.77 and 27.63.
"Our distance group did a phenomenal job," praised Lindquist. "To come back after Friday's races and perform the way they did is outstanding. I thought we might come out a little flat today after racing hard on Friday, but we swam very well.
"We had a lot better races today we weren't spending the whole time swimming in St. Olaf's wake," continued Lindquist. "There were a lot of very close races and I'm more than pleased with the effort everyone put forth."
