Tommies' offense finally comes to life
as UST beats Stevens Point with 2 in 7th
WAVERLY, Iowa It took 13 innings, but St. Thomas finally got on the scoreboard Friday afternoon, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat UW-Stevens Point and stave off elimination in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Friday afternoon.
The Tommies, who dropped a 1-0 decision to defending national champion Saint Mary's in their opening-round game Friday,k rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to eliminate the Pointers.
The Pointers (25-13) appeared to have the game in control, getting their lone run in the sixth as Carrie Heimsen laced a two-out single to score Nikki Best.
The Tommies (34-8), however, finally got their offense on track in the bottom of the seventh. Casey Curson drew a one-out walk and, one out later, moved to second on a single by Gina Utecht. Emily Baumann followed with an RBI single to score Curson with the tying run and give UST runners on second and third with two outs. A walk to Megan Hovick loaded the bases and Avery Heidenreich laced the game-winning single to left.
Stacy Tamble pitched a complete-game seven-hitter for UST, which will face Marian in a noon elimination game on Saturday. |
