Cardinals land 6 on all-tournament team

WAVERLY, Iowa — Defending NCAA Division III Midwest Regional champion Saint Mary's University landed six players on the all-tournament team, it was announced following Sunday's final game.

Jennifer Gonerka (St. Paul, Minn.), who pitched eight scoreless innings — earning the save in SMU's 8-3 winner's bracket game over Wartburg on Saturday and picking up the win with two-hit ball for 5.2 innings in Sunday's title-clinching 1-0 victory — was named to the team as a pitcher, while second baseman Niki Lynch (Winona, Minn.), third baseman Gina Rizzardi (Woodbury, Minn.), outfielders Ann Munzenmaier (Urbandale, Iowa) and Jennifer Meyer (Oconowoc, Wis.), and pitcher/first baseman Jill Hocking (Apple Valley, Minn.) were also named to the 15-player team.

Hocking collected four hits in nine at-bats (.444) in SMU's three regional tournament games, while also added a double and a two-run home run. On the mound, Hocking was 2-0 and did not give up an earned run in 12.1 innings. She walked two and struck out six. Lynch, meanwhile, boasted a .429 avearge (3-for-7), including a pair of run-scoring doubles as she drove in a team-leading three runs. Rizzardi belted out a pair of hits in nine at-bats (.222), the first a two-run single to open the scoring in SMU's 8-3 win over Wartburg, while also playing a flawless third base (2 putouts, 6 assists, 0 errors). The duo of Munzenmaier and Meyer both hit .400 (4-for-10), with Meyer picking up double among her four hits and scoring two runs, compared to Munzenmaier's one run scored.
