6th-inning run carries Marian past Stevens Point
WAVERLY, Iowa Susie Morton drove in the game's only run with a two-out sigle as No. 5 seed Marian knocked off No. 4 seed Marian 1-0 in the opening game of the NCAA Midwest Regional Fastpitch Softball Tournament Friday afternoon.
After five scoreless innings, the Sabres (22-13) finally got on the board in the sixth as Jamie Daul reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on Kari Moore's single and scored on Morton's base hit to center.
UW-Stevens Point (25-`12) pitcher Nicki Bertram allowed just four hits in 6.2 innings, but the two Sabres' singles in the sixth proved to be her downfall. Bertram finsihed with three strikeouts and walked five. Marian's Moore tossed the complete-game shutout, allowing five hits, while walking five and striking out one.
Point loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Moore got our of he inning wiht a ground ball forceout. The Pointers threatened again in the seventh, but a failed steal attempt wiped out a leadoff walk, and Carrie Hermsen followed with a double but was stranded at third. |
