Roanoke scores early and often in routing North Central 8-0

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The Roanoke fastpitch softball team scored early and often Thursday afternoon, as Maroons routed North Central 8-0 in five innings in Game 2 of the NCAA Division III National Championships at Gelein Field.

Roanoke, one of three teams returning from last year's championship field of eight, scored two runs in the first, four in the second and two more in the third en route to the lopsided victory. The Maroons will take on Central-Iowa, a 1-0 winner over Ithaca earlier Thursday, in Friday's 4 p.m. winner's bracket game. North Central, meanwhile, will face Ithaca in Friday's 11 a.m. loser's bracket game.

Overshadowed in the Maroons' offensive barrage was the pitching of Amy Layman, who tossed a complete-game one-hitter. The sophomore, who improved to 22-5 with the win, lost her bid for a no-hitter in the fourth inning, surrendering a double to Amanda Talley.

Roanoke (43-9) scored all the runs it would need in the top of the first, plating a pair of unearned runs. Crystal Berry led off the inning with a single, then beat out the throw to second on Layman's fielder's choice bunt. Holly Morris picked up an infield single to load the bases, then a wild pitch and an error on the throw by catcher Teri Hanson scored both Berry and Layman.

The Maroon's added four more runs in the second, then added two more unearned runs in the third — both coming on a three-base throwing error by North Central pitcher Breanne Robertson — to seal seventh win in their last eight games.

Berry, Layman and Rachel Capozzi each collected two hits — with Layman and Capozzi belting two of the Maroon's three doubles — to lead Roanoke's nine-hit attack.

Shannon Pedersen (23-4) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Cardinals (44-10), as the freshman gave up four hits and five runs — three earned — in 1.2 innings. Robertson tossed the final 2.1 innings, giving up three runs — one earned — on five hits, while striking out three and walking 1.
