How TheyGot Here

Roanoke went 3-1 in winning their second straight Atlantic Regional championship. The Maroons opened play with a 1-0 win over Christopher Newport, then split games with Salisbury State — winning 5-3 and losing 2-0 — before wrapping up the title with a 7-3 win over Salisbury.

Pre-TournamentNotes

Roanoke enters the national tournament with a 41-9 overall record. … For the first time in team history, a Roanoke pitcher has reached triple digits in the strikeout column in a single season. Amy Layman’s 111 strikeouts this season are by far a school record, surpassing her own mark of 81, which she set as a freshman. Entering this week’s play, Layman has 321 career strikeouts. She had 71 as a sophomore and 58 last season as a junior. Layman’s 21 pitching wins are also the most in team history, breaking her own mark of 18 (1999). … Sophomore pitcher Priscilla Hill started off her college career with a 17-0 record before losing her first decision, that to Salisbury State in regional play. Last season, in her first year in a maroon and gray uniform, Hill went 4-0 with a 0.88 earned run average. Hill pushed her career mark to 17-0 with a 13-0 start to the 2001 season. After getting the loss in Sunday’s first game, Hill responded by getting her first career save in the win that clinched Roanoke's berth in the national championship bracket. … In a three-game span in early March, the Maroons went 0-3, marking the first time since early-March 1998 that the team had gone winless in three games. Since that stretch this season, the team has not lost back-to-back games.
