Losses to Wheaton, William Patterson leave Cardinals searching for 1st win PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. Day 2 of the NFCA Lead-Off Classic started in much the same fashion as Day 1 ended and that wasn't good news for the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team. SMU, still smarting from an 8-0 thumping at the hands of Trinity on Friday, surrendered 12 runs including six in the top of the sixth inning in falling to Wheaton 12-1 Saturday morning in the final pool play game. The Cardinals limited William Patterson to just two fourth-inning runs in their second game Saturday, but two runs proved to be more than enough, as the Pioneers posted a 2-0 victory, keeping SMU winless on the season. SMU, which fell to 0-2 vs. the Lyons who eliminated the Cardinals from the 2001 NCAA Division III World Series with a 3-2 victory fell behind 3-0 after an inning and a half against Wheaton, before plating their lone run in the bottom of the second on Jenna Johnson's (Menomonie, Wis.) first collegiate home run. That, however, was the extent of the Cardinals' offense. Wheaton, on the other hand, was just getting warmed up, as the Lyons pushed their lead to 6-1 with three runs in the fifth, then iced the win with six, sixth-inning runs. The Cardinals banged out seven hits including a 2-for-3 performance from Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) but could not plate a single run for the second time in their four games this season. |
