The Cardinals are coming off back-to-back loses to top-ranked St. Thomas in the teams’ MIAC opener on Thursday. The Tommies scored once in the fourth, four times in the fifth and once in the sixth in posting a 6-0 Game 1 win, then completed the sweep with an 8-2 victory in the nightcap that was fueled by a pair of two-run innings and a three-run fourth. … St. Catheirne, meanwhile, had its conference-opener against Concordia rained out and has been off since March 23, when the Wildcats completed a 1-9 showing at the Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif., with a 9-0 loss to Tufts.

The Cardinals scored four runs in the third inning to rally from a 3-0 deficit and win the opener 4-3, then erupted for five runs in the top of the ninth inning including a three-run home run off the bat of Tara Close (North St. Paul, Minn.) to complete the sweep with a 9-4 triumph in the nightcap in the teams' MIAC meeting a year ago.

The Cardinals’ Game 1 loss to St. Thomas Thursday snapped SMU’s season-high four-game losing streak. It was also the third time this season that SMU has been shut out. … SMU has now dropped its last 14 meetings vs. St. Thomas, dating back to a 1-0 Cardinal win at the 2001 NCAA Regional Tournament when Cardinal head coach Jen Miller was the team’s starting catcher. … After scoring 33 runs and banging out 51 hits during their four-game win streak, SMU was held to just two runs on 12 hits in its two games vs. the Tommies. … Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) went 4-for-6 against the Tommies, accounting for four of the Cardinals’ 12 hits. … Mondo and Danielle Geske (Rosemount, Minn.) each hit safely in both games vs. UST, extending their season-high hitting streaks to seven.
