Royal Notes
The start to the MIAC season was a tough one for the Royals, who opened MIAC play against St. Thomas and Gustavus — which finished 1-2 in the MIAC a year ago — and the two teams did not go easy on Bethel, as UST won 10-0 and 11-3, while the Gusties rolled to wins of 13-5 and 8-0. All four games were shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule. … Since that 0-4 MIAC start, the Royals have gone 2-4 — splitting vs. Concordia and Augsburg, before dropping both games vs. Saint Benedict last Saturday. … Nine of the Royals’ 26 games have gone the scheduled seven innings — Bethel has played seven extra-inning games (going 3-3-1 in those seven games), while 10 have been shortened by the eight-run rule (the Royals are 3-7 in those 10 games). … Lauren Habisch boasts team-bests in batting average (.383), hits (31), and doubles (8), while Molly Trombley has scored a team-leading 17 runs and Amber Beasley has driving in a team-best 18 runs. … Trombley also leads the team in walks (14) and stolen bases (8), and shares the team lead in home runs (2) with Laura Naig. … Nea Harkness and Charitey Rowden have been the workhorses on the mound for Bethel. Harkness has pitched 77 inning, going 8-5 with a 4.09 ERA and 49 Ks, while Rowden is 3-6 with a 5.48 ERA in 69 innings. She has also struck out a team-high 56 batters.

Last Action

The Cardinals failed to hold a seventh-inning, Game 2 lead for the second straight day, as Hamline rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat SMU 2-1 in Game 2 Saturday. SMU opened the MIAC doubleheader scoring four times in the top of the seventh to beat the Pipers, 4-1. Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Jenny Giannini (River Grove, Ill.) both drove in two runs in the Game 1 win, while the Cardinals managed just six singles — all by different players — in the Game 2 loss. … Bethel, meanwhile, dropped both ends of an MIAC DH vs. St. Benedict, falling 3-1 and 8-0.

Last Meeting

The Cardinals went to both ends of the spectrum to post their MIAC sweep of Bethel. In Game 1, the Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the first inning — and then held on for dear life en route to a nail-biting 2-1 victory. In Game 2, the Cardinals scored in four of the five innings they batted and coasted to a five-inning, 11-1 triumph.

The Cardinals couldn't hold a seventh-inning lead in back-to-back Game 2s last weekend, falling to UW-Eau Claire (7-6) and Hamline (2-1). … SMU had six hits vs. the Pipers in the second game — all singles, and all by different players. … SMU's Game 2 loss to Hamline Saturday marked the first time in the Cardinals' last 12 games that they have lost to a non-ranked team (SMU lost twice to top-ranked St. Thomas and once to No. 5 UW-Eau Claire during that span). … The Cardinals' 7-6 loss to the Blugolds Friday snapped their season-high five-game winning streak. … The Blugolds' seven runs mark just the fifth time this season SMU has allowed six or more runs. …  Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and Danielle Geske (Rosemount, Minn.) were both held hitless in Game 1 vs. Hamline, snapping their respective 13-game hitting streaks. … Jenny Giannini's (River Grove, Ill.) eight-game streak is currently SMU's longest consecutive hit streak. … Mondo did walk a season-high three times in Game 1 vs. Hamline and has now reached base safely in 16 of SMU's 18 games. … Mondo went 4-for-7 against the Blugolds, marking her team-leading eighth and ninth multiple-hit games. … Megan Wallisch (Loveland, Colo.) threw four straight complete-games in going 2-2 vs. UW-Eau Claire and Hamline. The SMU senior, who has pitched 96.1 of the team's 117.1 innings, equalled her season high with nine strikeouts in Game 1 vs. Hamline. … SMU has started the same nine players in all 18 games. … The Cardinals scored nearly as many runs in the seventh inning in Game 1 vs. Hamline (4) as they had in their previous 16 games combined (5). … SMU is unbeaten when scoring in the first inning, and 11-1 when scoring the game's first run.
