Rollercoaster ride continues with back-to-back Sun West setbacks

ORANGE, Calif. — The first three days of the season have been a real rollercoaster ride for the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team.

The Cardinals opened the season with back-to-back losses to Rutgers Camden (5-4 in 8 innings) and Simon Fraser (7-2) on Thursday, then followed that up with victories over Rutgers Camden (5-4 in 9 innings) and Mount St. Joseph (10-1 in five innings) on Friday.

Down … then up … then …

Down.

Puget Sound and Point Loma (Calif.) forced the Cardinals' ride to plummet back down from Friday's high, as the Loggers dropped SMU 4-2, while the Sea Lions used a pair of two-run innings — the second in the bottom of the eighth — to beat the Cardinals 4-3.

"It was a tough day," said SMU coach Nikki Fennern, whose team is now 2-4 during its first six games of the Sun West Tournament. "I thought we played pretty well, we just weren't able to get the clutch hits when we needed them."

SMU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning against Puget Sound, but the Loggers bounced back, tagging SMU pitcher Jenny Schipp (Oakdale, Minn.) for all four of their runs in the fifth inning.

The Cardinals again took the lead early against Point Loma, scoring single runs in the first and sixth innings to take a 2-0 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. The Sea Lions countered with two runs in their final at-bat to force extra innings, then, after SMU scored once in the top of the eighth, iced the win with their second straight two-run inning in the bottom of the eighth.

"I was very happy with our pitchers, they did a great job all day," said Fennern, who watched Schipp strike out a season-high 11 batters in the loss to Puget Sound, while Erin Leone (Farmington, Minn.) and Megan Wallisch (Loveland, Colo.) combined on a nine-hitter vs. Point Loma. "Offensively, we've still got a ways to go, and our defense needs some work.

"But that's why we are out here, to work out some of the kinks before we get into conference play."
