Cardinals' Erin Leone named MIAC PItcher of Week
On Saturday, the SMU freshman pitcher posted her first 14-strikeout performance, limiting Concordia to just three hits in a 2-0 SMU victory. On Monday, Leone earned a first of a different sort, garnering Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors. Leone's 14-strikeout gem her second three-hitter and second complete-game shutout of the season highlighted a stellar week for the Cardinal fireballer. Leone was perfect in her three appearances last week. She posted a 2-0 record and did not allow a run in 12.1 innings in helping the Cardinals to a 5-1 record. Leone opened the week with two innings of no-hit relief, striking out four of the six batters she faced in a Game 2 win over Bethel, and followed that up with 3.1 innings of scoreless, no-hit relief in SMU's 5-4, come-from-behind Game 2 win over the Gusties. Leone then completed her dominant run with her complete-game, three-hitter against Concordia, striking out a season- and career-high 14 batters. For the season, Leone has appeared in 16 games, compiling a team-best 1.38 earned-run-average and a 5-0 record in 50.2 innings. She has allowed just 10 earned runs, while walking 13 and stirking out 76. |
