Cardinals' Gutterman, Schipp, Jung named All-MIAC
They have also proven to be a rather lethal 1-2-3 punch off the field as well. Less than a week after being named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Midwest Region Second Team, the Cardinal trio was in the limelight again, landing spots on the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team. Gutterman was the team's offensive sparkplug during their drive to a third-place regular-season MIAC finish and a berth in their second-straight conference tournament. The SMU senior shortstop batted a team-best .476, while also leading the team in at-bats (82), runs (26), hits (39), triples (5). total bases (60), slugging percentage (.732) and stolen bases (16). Her five triples were tops in the conference, while her 26 runs, 39 hits and 16 stolen bases ranked her second in the MIAC. Gutterman put together a 14-game MIAC hitting streak, and had at least two hits in 11 of SMU's 22 conference games. In the field, Gutterman boasted a stellar .971 fielding percentage, committing just two errors in 70 chances. Schipp was double-trouble for Cardinal opponents, hitting .418 (28-for-67) with a pair of home runs, 13 RBIs and 11 stolen bases, while also compiling a 9-2 record and a 0.88 ERA in 72.0 innings pitched. Schipp allowed just nine earned runs, walked 19 and struck out 88. She ranked third among MIAC pitchers in strikeouts, while her earned-run-average was fifth. Jung, meanwhile, was SMU's rock at third base this season. The Cardinal junior boasted a .412 batting average (28-for-68) with 15 runs, a team- and conference-best 10 doubles, one triple, one home run and a team-leading 20 RBIs. Jung, who collected five multiple-RBI games and nine multiple-hit games, walked a team-leading nine times and finished with just four errors in 70 chances at third. SMU's Erin Leone (Farmington, Minn.), Jenny Giannini (River Grove, Ill.) and Tara Close (North St. Paul, Minn.) were honorable-mention All-MIAC selections. |
