WINONA, Minn. The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team landed three players on the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Midwest Region teams, it was announced Thursday.
Junior Amy Edge (Mineral Point, Wis.) and sophomore Jenni Gutterman (Shoreview, Minn.) were named to the All-Region Second Team, while sophomore Jenny Schipp (North St. Paul, Minn.) was a Third-Team selection.
Edge, who started all 36 games in leading the Cardinals to a 23-15 overall record SMU's 11th straight season with 20 or more wins led Saint Mary's in virtually every offensive category. She boasted a team-best .416 batting average (42-for-101), and also led the team in doubles (14), home runs (3), RBis (32), walks (14) and on-base percentage (.483). The junior catcher also had 11 multiple-RBI games, and posted a season-best nine-game hitting streak.
Gutterman enjoyed a career year in 2004, batting .403 with a team-high 52 hits in 129 at-bats. She also led the team in triples (8), home runs (3), total bases (84) and slugging percentage (.651). She also stole a team-best 16 bases in 18 attempts and fielded .949, committing just seven errors in 131 chances at third base. Her eight triples set a new school record and rank her tied for second among all NCAA Division III players.
Schipp was the Cardinals' workhorse on the mound, appearing in 28 of the Cardinals' 38 games. She threw 157.1 innings, allowing 106 hits and 38 earned runs, while walking 49 and striking out 171. The sophomore right-hander boasted a 2.17 ERA and a 15-8 record. She tossed 16 complete games, including seven complete-game shutouts. Her 171 strikeouts are the second-most in a single season in SMU history, behind only Kelly King's 286 in 1997. Schipp also had two no-hitters including her first career perfect game in an 8-0 win vs. Augsburg on April 21 and three one-hitters.
The Cardinal trio were three of 18 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players named to the NFCA's three teams. Regular-season and MIAC postseason tournament champion St. Thomas landed three players Janet Nagle, Nikki Conway and Michelle Wong on the first team, while Gustavus' Audrey Lenoch and Hamline's Amanda Gage were also first-team selections. Kristi Huegel of St. Thomas and Ani Jordan of St. Benedict joined Edge and Gutterman on the second team, while Hamline's Marion Zillhardt, Joan Sheedy, Rachael Young and Niki Seal, along with St. Benedict's Kari Dykhoff and Michelle Boys, St. Thomas' Kaja Martinson and Gustavus' Molly Biehn joined Schipp on the third team.
